Earlier this year, I was planning a trip to St Pete Beach for the first time and stumbled across this little community at the southern end of St Pete Beach…Pass-a-Grille. Recent visitors raved about everything there is to enjoy at the park, especially the lengthy dog beach.I’ve been going to Florida for a loooong time, but just when I think I’ve been (or at least heard of) everywhere, I find out about another amazing spot. At the waterfront, travelers can also rent a canoe or kayak and navigate the 2-mile paddling trail or try fishing. The popular North Beach is recognizable by the large pirate ship playground near its entrance and the myriad of seashells and white sand dollars along its sands. The park is also one of the best places in St. Then, stop by the Quartermaster Museum to learn more about the fort through historic photographs and Spanish-American War artifacts. Climb the stairs of the fort for a breathtaking view of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge, one of the world's longest cable-stayed concrete bridges. The park features 7 miles of waterfront, two fishing piers, multiple hiking and biking trails, picnic and camping grounds and a historic fort. Spanning five small islands, the 1,136-acre Fort De Soto Park lies at the mouth of Tampa Bay and attracts more than 2.7 million visitors a year. A parking pass for nearby metered parking spots is sold at the shuttle check-in location. Shell Key Shuttle offers a 10 minute boat ride that costs $25 for those 13 and over and $12.50 for kids 3 to 12. It is always accessible, but only by boat. Shell Key Preserve is located about 12 miles southwest of downtown St. Offseason, trips may be cancelled day-of due to weather or low attendance. Some noted that the shuttle does not always make all scheduled trips – calling ahead is wise. The waters here are shallow and clear, and some took advantage of the chance to snorkel. Recent visitors called this excursion a highlight of their vacation. Private vessels can pull up to the island, or visitors can take the public Shell Key Shuttle. There are no facilities or developments of any kind and access is only via boat. Trails are also on-site, should you desire a walk. Nesting, wintering, and migrating birds are important parts of this ecosystem, which means the area is prime for bird-watching. More than 1,800 protected acres – which include their own barrier island – is a place for humans to connect with the beauty of nature. Those looking to escape development entirely will enjoy Shell Key Preserve.
